ARNOLD KNOLL SCHOOL

(Picture unavailable. Unless someone out there has one ???)

What is believed to be the first Public school in Lake County was started in the Kelsey Creek School District 1 mile east of the present town of Finley and a few hundred feet south of Finley Road in Big Valley. It was probably in existence even before Napa County organized two school districts in Clear Lake Township, April 1856.
This little school was built of rough lumber on the knoll, (which may have also been a burial ground at one time). The school was built by Rev. Davis, who owned the land. He also started a Methodist Church South and the services were held in the little school. Later, a Mr. Arnold moved onto the property and eventually built a small home.
After a time, the building became too small to hold all of the children of the area, and two new schools were built: Kelsey Creek School and Big Valley School.
It isn't recorded when this school ceased to operate, but the building was still standing in the 1870s.
